Alfred Abbas bio
|
From New York to London, Manila to Tokyo, Alfred Abbas has traveled far and wide, absorbing the many cultures he's experienced, bringing a depth to his music and lyrics that far belies his 19 years. The son of a Boricua/Dominican mother and a Pakistani/Somali father—a former guitar player for 70’s soul singer Sylvester—Alfred has had no shortage of influences to draw from in his rich cultural background. Teen years spent in southern United States, would prepare this talented artist for the hard times that greeted him upon arriving in New York—the city Abbas always felt he needed to inhabit to forge his career. Imbued with a worldly confidence and inner drive, he rolled up his sleeves and got right to work, living in a tiny room, and supporting himself by sweeping floors at the Broadway Dance Center. At night, beating the pavement, singing at open mics in places like Cafe Wha, The Village Underground, Soul Cafe and Sugar Bar, it was not long before his pure voice, striking looks, and positive vibe on stage caught the eye of some of New York's artists and songwriters. His first break happened when he had the opportunity to work with Billy Lawrence (Mary J Blige) who introduced him to Ryan Leslie (Britney Spears). Alfred and Ryan’s instant connection led to Abbas co-producing his debut independent album 'Cigarettes and Lies' with Leslie in 2007, with Abbas writing all the songs on the album. This album was well received and provided a well-deserved boost to his career, allowing him to play numerous shows in New York and Manila as well as a two week tour of Japan performing at clubs and doing in-store appearances, all the while gathering a large online fan base. While in Japan, Glad News Clothing, a popular label in Japan, New York and Los Angeles, quickly signed him to an endorsement contract. Alfred’s undeniable talent later caught the ear of multi-platinum producer/songwriter Toby Gad, when he opened for singer/actress Elisabeth Withers (Shug Avery in the broadway mega-hit “The Color Purple”). They had an immediate chemistry, and he co-wrote and co-produced four tracks with Toby as well as Toby's brother, Jens, a successful international producer in his own right, with whom he wrote eight songs. Adding to the list of great producers, he has collaborated with Martin “Doc” McKinney (Res, Esthero). It was not long before Wyclef Jean would happen upon Alfred Abbas through a mutual friend he was visiting at his studio. He came to find that Alfred was a singer and asked Abbas to play him something. Impressed by what he heard, Wyclef later surprised Abbas by showing up at one of his gigs, joining him on stage. Wyclef later told Abbas' father what had drawn him to Abbas was his “make it happen” attitude, an essential quality for a young up and coming artist to have. Alfred is already a seasoned performer whose poise and confidence are at odds with his youth. His own words sum up his mission, “I'm interested in making good music. Feel-good music. The kind of music that's relatable and real”. And real is just what Abbas is. His skilled blending of the old school with the new has everyone taking notice. - The ReEvolution of Soul.
